Madrid is privileged to enjoy a representative selection of one of the world’s largest private collections of nativity scenes. Started in 1977 by the couple Antonio Basanta and María de los Ángeles Martín, the collection continues to grow. It reflects the couple’s passion, dedication and commitment to this deeply symbolic tradition’s art, history and culture.

With more than 4,200 nativity scenes and 30,000 figures from 154 countries, the collection includes pieces dating from the eighteenth century to the present.

Made of more than two hundred different materials, including clay, wood and glass, they bear witness to the work of great craftsmen from different periods. Among its gems are two monumental nativity scenes: the Neapolitan and the Sicilian, each with more than 130 figures. The collection is maintained in excellent condition by restorers and has been exhibited at major institutions in Spain and Portugal.
