The figures have been created using papier-mâché techniques by artisans Gregorio Salvador, Ramón Espinoza and the Raiza Alambrería collective from the state of Morelos, with flowers made with totomoxtle leaf dyed with natural pigments by artisan Roberto Jiménez from the state of Oaxaca.
The main nativity scene is accompanied by a series of more than 20 smaller nativity scenes made using various craft techniques.
